Before you hire a mover for a move across state lines, check two numbers: the USDOT number and the MC number. They are one of the quickest ways to confirm you are dealing with a real, registered company.

What a USDOT number is

The U.S. Department of Transportation assigns USDOT numbers to commercial carriers. It is used to track a company's safety information, inspections, and compliance.

What an MC number is

An MC number shows that a company has operating authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to move household goods between states for hire.

How to check a mover

Search the company's numbers on the FMCSA website. Make sure the name and address match the company you are talking to and that its authority is active.
