How to Plan a Stress-Free Local Move in NYC
Updated: Sep 17
A local move across New York City may only be a few miles, but it comes with challenges you won't find in most places: walk-ups, elevator reservations, tight street parking, and building rules. A little planning makes moving day much smoother. Here is the simple plan we share with Crossroads Moving customers.
Four weeks out: book your movers
Choose your date and book a licensed mover. End-of-month weekends fill up first, so a midweek or mid-month date gives you more options. Share your floor numbers, elevator access, and large items so your estimate matches your move.
Three weeks out: talk to both buildings
Ask your current and new building managers about move hours, freight elevator reservations, and certificate of insurance (COI) requirements. Send the COI details to your mover early so the paperwork is ready well before moving day.
Two weeks out: declutter and start packing
Pack books, off-season clothes, and decor first. Donate or discard what you won't use in your new place. If you have old furniture to get rid of, Crossroads Moving can handle junk removal on the same day as your move.
Moving week: finish strong
Pack the kitchen and bathroom last, label every box by room, and keep an essentials bag with you. Confirm your arrival window with your mover the day before, and make sure the elevator reservation is still in place.
