Upright vs. Grand Piano Moving: What's the Difference?
Updated: Sep 17
Not all piano moves are the same. The type of piano you own changes how it is prepared, carried, and loaded.
Upright and spinet pianos
Uprights stay in one piece. They are wrapped in padding, strapped to a piano dolly, and kept upright while moving. Their height and top-heavy shape need careful handling on stairs and ramps.
Grand and baby grand pianos
Grands are usually moved on their side. The crew removes the legs and pedal lyre, wraps the body, and straps it to a piano board. The parts are padded and packed separately, then reassembled at your new home.
NYC building access
Measure doorways, elevator cars, and stair turns at both locations. Share these measurements and photos with your mover so they can plan the route before moving day.
