Moving From NYC to New Jersey: What to Expect
Updated: Sep 17
New Jersey is one of the most common destinations for people leaving New York City. The distance is short, but the move still crosses a state line, and that changes a few things.
It is an interstate move
Because the move crosses from New York into New Jersey, your mover needs federal operating authority. Check the company's USDOT and MC numbers before you book.
Plan around tunnels and bridges
Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and George Washington Bridge traffic can add real time to a move. Mid-morning starts and midweek dates usually help. Tolls may also be part of your estimate.
Check both buildings
High-rises in Jersey City and Hoboken often require a COI and elevator reservation, just like Manhattan buildings. Houses in the suburbs may be easier to load but farther away.
Update your paperwork
After you move, you'll need to update your driver's license, vehicle registration, and voter registration in New Jersey.
