Moving in Manhattan: Walk-Ups, Doormen, and Parking
Updated: Sep 17
Manhattan moves are all about logistics. The building you live in, the street outside, and the time of day can matter as much as how much you own.
Walk-up buildings
Older walk-ups often have narrow stairs and tight landings. Measure large pieces like sofas and bed frames before moving day, and tell your mover how many flights there are so the right crew size is sent.
Doorman, co-op, and condo buildings
These buildings usually require a COI, a freight elevator reservation, and moves within set weekday hours. Let the doorman or super know your schedule and confirm which entrance movers should use.
Truck parking
Curb space is limited on most Manhattan streets. Early starts help, and it is worth checking for street events, construction, or alternate-side parking rules near both addresses.
Plan for traffic
Crossing town or leaving the island can take longer than expected. A mid-morning weekday start often avoids the heaviest traffic.
