Moving in Brooklyn: Brownstones, Stoops, and Street Parking
Updated: Sep 17
Brooklyn has some of the most varied housing in New York City, from classic brownstones to new towers along the waterfront. Each type of building needs a slightly different moving plan.
Brownstones and stoops
Steep front stoops and narrow interior stairs can make large furniture tricky. Measure your biggest pieces and tell your mover about the stairs so they bring the right crew and equipment.
Walk-up apartments
Many pre-war walk-ups in neighborhoods like Bushwick and Crown Heights have tight landings. Taking apart bed frames and tables ahead of time can speed things up.
Waterfront high-rises
Newer buildings in Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn usually require a COI and freight elevator reservation. Contact management early.
Street parking
Curb space is limited in busy neighborhoods. Check alternate-side parking rules and plan an early start when streets are easier to access.
