Move-Out Checklist for NYC Renters
Updated: Sep 17
Moving out of a New York City rental involves more than packing. Use this checklist to protect your security deposit and leave on good terms.
Give proper notice
Check your lease for the notice period and send written notice to your landlord. Keep a copy for your records.
Document the apartment
Take dated photos and video of every room after it is empty and clean. This helps if there is a disagreement about your deposit.
Schedule utilities and mail
Set end dates for electricity, gas, and internet, and start service at your new home. Submit a change of address with USPS about two weeks before you move.
Book the elevator and movers
Reserve the freight elevator, confirm move hours, and send your mover's certificate of insurance to management if required.
Clear everything out
Leftover furniture and trash can cost you part of your deposit. Crossroads Moving can remove junk on the same day as your move. Call 201-567-4135 for a free quote.
