How to Move a Piano Safely
Updated: Sep 17
Pianos are heavy, top-heavy, and full of delicate parts. Moving one without the right equipment can injure people and damage the instrument, the floors, and the walls. Here is what a safe piano move involves.
Why it takes professionals
Most of a piano's weight sits in its cast iron plate and frame, and the weight is not evenly spread. Legs, pedals, and the keyboard can break if the piano is tipped or dragged.
The right equipment
Our crews use heavy padding, straps, and piano dollies or boards to control the piano's weight on stairs, ramps, and tight turns.
How to prepare
Close and lock the lid if possible, remove items from the top, and clear a wide path to the door. Tell your mover the piano type, the number of stairs, and any tight corners when you request a quote.
After the move
Changes in temperature and humidity affect tuning. Let the piano settle in its new room for a couple of weeks before scheduling a tuner.
