Moving Across the Country From New York: An 8-Week Timeline
Updated: Sep 17
A cross-country move has a lot of moving parts. Spreading tasks over eight weeks keeps it manageable.
8 weeks out
Get quotes from licensed interstate movers, check their USDOT and MC numbers, and choose your moving date. Start a moving folder for estimates and receipts.
6 weeks out
Declutter every room. Sell, donate, or schedule junk removal for items you won't bring. Research schools, doctors, and services in your new city.
4 weeks out
Start packing non-essentials. Book elevator reservations and send COI requirements to your mover. Arrange utilities at your new home.
2 weeks out
Submit a USPS change of address, confirm your moving details and delivery window, and plan your own travel to the new city.
Moving week
Finish packing, pack a bag with essentials and documents to carry with you, and make sure your mover has a phone number to reach you during delivery.
