Binding vs. Non-Binding Moving Estimates Explained

When you get a quote for a long-distance move, the type of estimate matters as much as the number. For interstate moves, federal rules recognize two main types: binding and non-binding.

Binding estimate

A binding estimate sets the price for the items and services listed. If you add items or services on moving day, the price can change, so a complete inventory is important.

Non-binding estimate

A non-binding estimate is the mover's best guess, and the final cost is based on the actual weight or services. Under federal rules, at delivery the mover generally cannot require you to pay more than 110 percent of a non-binding estimate, with any remaining balance billed later.

Questions to ask

Which type of estimate is this? What is included? What could change the price? When is payment due? Interstate movers should also give you the FMCSA booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move.
